Allaipiddy people and its Philip Neri church face another massacre

Sri Lankan army (SLA) had put the entire Jaffna peninsula under 24 hour curfew on 12 and 13 August. The curfew continues to date but each day the curfew is lifted for 2 hours.

On 13 August scores of Allaipiddy people walked the 8 Kms from Allaipiddy to reach the Jaffna teaching hospital to tell the story of yet another massacre of the Allaipiddy people who had taken refuge in the Philip Neri church in Allaipiddy on 13 August. People told of the massacre caused by the shelling of the SLA.

Hearing of the massacre, Jaffna district Judge, Srinithi Nandasekaran, went with a team in an ambulance to Allaipiddy after obtaining permission from the SLA in Jaffna. In her team was a member of Sri Lankan Red Cross. When this team reached Allaipiddy, they found fifteen dead bodies in the church and 57 injured people. Due to space restriction only four of the bodies were brought back to Jaffna hospital in the ambulance. The other bodies are still lying in the church.

This is the third major massacre involving this same church, the second of which occurred on 13 May 2006 when Sri Lankan Navy shot dead 13 people including two children under the age of four who were sleeping between their parents.

In 1990, 300 young men disappeared after SLA arrested them from this same church.
